Puno - Lake Titicaca

The city of Puno is located in the south east corner of Peru, on the shores of the Lake Titicaca and only 126km from the frontier with Bolivia.
Altitude at 3,827m on altiplano (high plateau), Puno is and importand stop on the way to visit the islands on Lake Titicaca, such as Uros, Taquile and Amantani Island.

Puno consist of Indian cultures including the Aymara from the south and the Quechua from the north. It is said that 'Folkloric Capital of Peru' which it lives up to well with its huge number and variety of traditional fiestas, dances and music.

Lake Titicaca, 195 km in length with an average width of 50 km, is the largest lake in South America and the largest in the world above 3,827m. According to legend Lake Titicaca the birthplace of civilization. Wiracocha, the creator god, brought light into a dark world by directing the Sun, Moon and stars to rise up out of the lake and take their place in the sky. With time the Sun and Moon had children who also rose from the depths of the lake. These new people were sent out from Titicaca to the four corners of the earth, with Manco Capac and his sister-wife Mama Ocllo and their family clan being sent off to inhabit the Cusco region. Inca legend believed that Manco Capac was the first Inca and a direct descendent from the Sun. The supposed location in Titicaca of the birthplace of the Sun, Moon and Manco Capac is actually on the Bolivian side of the lake on the islands not surprisingly named the Island of the Sun and Island of the Moon. There are varieties of visits to Islands. Uros are the group of floating island, 20 minutes from Puno and where Aimara Speaking people make a living.

Taquile

Island is famous for their beautiful textiles and their traditional costumes.Taquile and Amantani people are both Quechua speaking people.Ladies in Amantani wear chuco with (traditional cloth), colourful stitch.

Half Day Uros

You will visit several Uros Island to see the life of floating Island dwellers . (8:00 am- 12:00 pm).

One Day Taquile

You will make a short stop at Uros Island and continues to Taquile Island wich is approximately 3 hours from Puno by boat, Stay in Taquile for 2 hours to see colourful hand made textiles and their life and boat will leave for Puno, arriving around 5:30 pm.

Two Days Taquile

If you like to stay at local hostel in the Island, you can stay one night and return by the afternoon boat on the next Day. You will be more relaxed and recommended if you have enough time.

Two Days Amantani

Make a short stop in Uros on the way to Amantani Island by boat stay at the hostel in Amantani Island. You can visit Inca Ruins on the hill top and also see the agricultural activities on the Island. Next morning visit Taquile Island and coming back to Puno around 5:30 pm.

August is the month of wind and strong wind blows in the area, some times the boat tour can be cancelled according to the wind or the boat move very much. Take a sea-sick pill if you tend to have a problem.

Half Day Sillustani

Sillustani is Pre-Inca and Inca archeological site which represents tombs, the largest Tomb is 12 meters high.

You will visit after lunch and coming back to Puno in the evening . It is 40 minutes away from Puno and there is no public transportation to the ruins. So the group tour is recommended unless you hire the taxi.
