This protected area contains 85 lakes which are home of 250 species of fish as well as both pink and gray fresh-water dolphins. The area originally set aside in 1940 became a national reserve in 1972. A number of ranger stations were set up to enforce reserve laws and monitor wildlife. The objectives of the reserve are to foster research and protection for all species of wildlife, foster socio-economic help for the local people and utilization of resources and tourism. Tourism plays an important role in that it brings in funds through an entrance fee that helps support the various programs and promotes awareness of the wildlife and plant resources within the reserve and the need for its continued protection. The Pacaya-Samiria National reserve is a good place to see pink Dolphins, a huge birds, like Cormorants, King Fishers, White Egrets, Toucans and Macaws, as well as go fishing for some piranhas and other fish species.

The reserve is home to, and protects, almost all those species native to low-lying jungle that are threatened with extinction, including the Spider monkey, the giant nutria, and Manati, as well as the Harpy Eagle.

The large number of lakes, creeks and swamps, the unique untouched scenery, the exuberant forest and the rich wildlife make the reserve an attractive destination for ecological tourism, scientific expeditions, exploration and adventure cruises.

Tarapoto / Rio Abiseo National Park

TARAPOTO
known as the City of Palms. Founded September 14, 1906, lies just 420m above sea level and has an average daily temperature range of between 29 and 37 degrees centigrade. The Río Huallaga flows on from here, via the Amazon, until it finally empties into the Atlantic Ocean many thousands of kilometres away.

The city lies between the Shilcayo and Cumbaza rivers and is the converging point for all land and air transport systems in the three regions, sierra, coast and jungle, in this part of Peru.

The department of San Martin, Higher Jungle of north-eastern Peru, is a colourful place with amazing scenery and enormous contrasts, offering the visitor adventure without limit in exuberant forests, extraordinary waterfalls, rivers, and mythical lagoons.

Hundreds of years ago, the people of this region built distinctive citadels, such as the Gran Pajaten (Great Pajaten), in the Rio Abiseo National Park, an architectural monument considered to be the greatest in architectural design in Peru.

Tarapoto, due to its strategic location, and its economic and tourist development, is also the entry point for excursions to the citadel of Kuelap, in the department of Amazonas; a huge fortress of stone, 584 meters long and 110 meters wide, built on the top of a mountain.

ATRACTIONS

RIO ABISEO NATIONAL PARK

Rio Abiseo National Park.
The park was created in 1983 to protect the fauna and flora of the rainforests that are characteristic of this region of the Andes. There is a high level of endemism among the fauna and flora found in the park. The yellow-tailed woolly monkey, previously thought extinct, is found only in this area. Research undertaken since 1985 has already uncovered 36 previously unknown archaeological sites at altitudes of between 2,500 and 4,000 m, which give a good picture of pre-Inca society.

Recognised as "Natural Heritage of Humankind" because of its natural and archaeological richness. It was created to protect the Cloud Forests ecosystem and the mono choro de cola amarilla (lagothrix flavicauda), a kind of monkey in extinction that was "rediscovered" in 1974. The "Gran Pajatén" is a great archaeological site which is said to be ten times bigger than Machu Picchu. Stone-built and decorated with human and animal wood figures at the front’s, this fortress is so impressive and hard to find in the forest.

Lowland access
Due to the fragility of the archaeological ruins and the lack of park infrastructure, Rio Abiseo has not been open to tourism since 1986. The local authorities have given permission to improve tourist facilities ranging from the construction of a road from Juanjui-Dos to Mayo-Gran Pajaten to the planned development of a tourist hotel at Juanjui, and a museum at Huicungo.

For this tour we recommend to stay 5 days, where we will enjoy the nature and wildlife, like the Yellow tail Woolly Monkey, and birds the most interesting Oil birds, they live in the cavities hundreds of them close to the Park guard entrance and the Military Macaw. The temperature 18-23°C (lowlands)

Chachapoyas and Kuelap

Peru’s northern jungles are about the least known part of the Amazon. The Department of Amazonas. Chachapoyas the capital of Amazonas The northern half of the department of Amazonas is lower jungle, whereas the south has the high slopes of the Andes. Chachapoyas is its capitol with altitude of about 2000 meters; this is the cloud forest of eternal mist, high in the Andes, overlooking the Amazon Basin, mist with orchids and bromeliads everywhere.
The fortified city of Kuelap is located in the district of Tingo, to the south of the town of Tingo, in the province of Luya, department of Amazonas.

Kuelap’s mystery has been studied. Construction began about 800AD; they were in power 300 years compared to less than 100 years of the Incas. John Hemming wrote in “Conquest of the Incas” that Kuelap was the strongest fortification in the Americas, and if the Inca could have made a stand there, the Spanish horses and artillery would be useless and history might have been different.

The enormous defensive walls which delimit its "Lower Town" and "Upper Town." With a length of 584 m and with of approximately 110 m. The wall along the perimeter reaches a height of 20 m.

The fortress has three entries, are built as long narrow passages which end in a small gate permitting the access of only one person.
The principal attraction of Kuelap is the typical vegetation of the area, which covers the fortress in its entirety. The big trees, adorned with orchids, persist. The vegetation gives a special mystical meaning to the place.
